OPTIMIZING CONNECTION SPEED FOR RENEGADE USING THE GAMESPY NETWORK.

With the excitement surrounding our official Renegade Demo launch, there are a number of players starting their own Renegade game servers without the proper bandwidth or computer hardware to support a large number of players online. They mean well, but the end result can be "laggy" server response times and poor gameplay. We're working on a fix to prevent this from being an issue, so please bear with us over the next 24 hours. In the meantime, those of you setting up your own servers should look at our server set-up guide first.

One good way to eliminate poor response times is to filter out non-dedicated servers. These servers are not only sending out tons of info to the connected clients but also drawing everything on their own screen which takes a lot of valuable CPU power. It's best to try and play on a dedicated server, one that is doing NOTHING but sending info back and forth between all of the connected clients.

Here's how to filter those types of servers out. First, click the little down arrow next to "Room Name" in the server list as shown below...

Then, click on the line "Advanced Filtering." Afterward, click on Enter Advanced Filter and set your rule to this:

dedicated = 1 (there's an example below)

.

If you're running your own server, please keep this in mind!

And if you're a player, or hosting your own server, be sure to set your connection speed properly. The Renegade demo defaults to a 56k connection speed, which is what you'll be playing at if you don't set the correct speed manually. To do this, follow the steps below.

First, launch the "Renegade Multiplayer Demo" icon found on your desktop.
Once the main menu screen appears click on "Multplay Internet."
Next, you will see a "GameSpy" option highlighted, click on it.
Now click on the "Options" button.
Click in the box that says "Connection," select the speed at which you use to access the internet.
Once this is complete, the connection option will be saved.

As mentioned earlier, we're working through the night to improve game performance and expect to address this issue in the next 24 hours. We'll keep you updated at GameSpy, as well as the Westwood site on further improvements and news as soon as they happen.

RENEGADE SERVER SET-UP GUIDE

It is very important that your game is setup to use the correct connection speed for your Internet connection. If the connection speed is not setup properly, it will drastically affect your game performance. This setting communicates to the server how frequently your game should update. If it is set too low, the server does not update your client as often as it could.
If this value is set too high, the server may flood your game with too much information.

If you are setting up a server, it is important that your connection speed is setup correctly. The connection speed for the server determines how frequently clients connected to the server are updated. This has a direct effect on the experienced "lag" of the players connected to your server.

To promote the best gameplay experience for all of our players, the server can only be setup as a dedicated server.

The number of allowable players is automatically detected and set by the game. We STRONGLY recommend that you do not run a server if your connection speed does not meet the following requirements:

Bandwidth > 2.0 Mb for a 32 player game
Bandwidth > 1.0 Mb for a 16 player game
Bandwidth > 0.5 Mb for an 8 player game

Cable modems and DSL are typically set to an upload bandwidth of 128k/sec and are NOT allowed to host.

:grrr:
